Who is Darkroom Daddy?

Darkroom Daddy is the creative identity of photographer Mick Watson.

The name was born in a Melbourne taxi in 2019 after an afternoon of good laughs. As a gay man of a certain age, “Daddy” came naturally, while “Darkroom” reflected both an appreciation of traditional film photography and the mood, mystery and nostalgia found in dimly lit spaces. The joke stuck, and so did the name.

Creativity has shaped much of my life. Photography, candle making, teaching, community projects and building organisations have all been chapters of the same story, making things, sharing ideas and always looking for the next creative challenge.

Photography has become the centre of that journey. Three generations of family photographers sparked an early interest, but it wasn’t until later in life that I truly rediscovered the camera as a creative outlet. It gave me a way to explore people, identity, community and the stories that exist between light and shadow.

Away from the camera you’ll usually find me in the workshop behind Carlton Candle Co, creating small-batch candles, fragrance and handcrafted objects. It’s a different creative practice, but one driven by the same appreciation for craftsmanship, patience and creating something that leaves a lasting impression.

It’s about creating atmosphere. One craft captures it. One craft creates it.

Darkroom Daddy has never been about chasing trends or building a creative empire. It’s simply a place to share the work I enjoy making, continue learning and hopefully inspire others to create something of their own.
