The Man Behind Darkroom Daddy
You’ve probably seen the name and wondered: what exactly is Darkroom Daddy?
At its heart, Darkroom Daddy is the creative house of Mick Watson, “Daddy” to many, where decades of craft, candles, photography, imagination, and curiosity come together in one evolving space.
Darkroom Daddy is built around atmosphere.
Through photography, it’s about capturing decisive moments with purpose and intent, shadow, form, mood, control.
Through candles and home fragrance, it’s about creating that same atmosphere in physical space, leather, smoke, timber, warmth.
Two mediums. Same mindset.
The name itself was born in a Melbourne taxi in 2019, after a leather event and a few good laughs. As a gay man of a certain age, the “Daddy” label comes naturally. Pair that with a love of the relationship between traditional red light photography darkrooms and dimly lit spaces, and a touch of nostalgia, and “Darkroom Daddy” was born. The joke stuck, and so did the identity.
Creativity has been part of Mick’s life for over 25 years. From candle-making to photography, teaching, community projects, the journey has included highs, rebuilds, reinventions, and plenty of learning along the way. Through it all, the creative spark never faded.
Photography, in particular, runs deep, three generations of family photographers laid the groundwork. Later in life, Mick rediscovered the camera as a powerful personal outlet, using it to tell stories, document community, and explore mood, intimacy, and connection. Today, he is often behind the lens at Sydney Leather Men Inc. events and beyond, growing alongside the community he loves.
He believes in photography with purpose, where each shot is crafted and collaborated to evoke emotion and inspire. Daddys mission is to create visually stunning works that resonate, blending a love for the craft with a touch creativity.
For many years, each creative passion lived under its own brand and presence. Eventually, reality set in, this wasn’t about escaping the day job, it was about making meaningful, honest, inspiring and creative work. Bringing everything under one ‘house’ with different creative rooms has made life simpler, more focused, and more joyful.
Candles and Mick have had a 25-year on-again, off-again romance. Long before “handcrafted” became trendy, he was playing with and pouring wax at his kitchen table, and 20 years ago, teaching candle making through adult education courses. There were years when it felt impossible to compete with cheap imports and mass-produced paraffin. The flame certainly dimmed for a while. But candle making always calls me back. It’s where I zone out. Work with my hands. Create something slow, intentional and often beautifully imperfect that has the power to shape and inspire mood and environment.
So, as Darkroom Daddy approached its sixth year, it felt like the right time to reset and evolve. What began as a personal platform has grown into a creative house grounded in mood, playfulness, and a hint of mischief. You’ll find handcrafted pieces, lifestyle objects, and photography in all its forms, from moody studio and fetish shoots to landscapes, experiments, and after-dark adventures.
The Darkroom Daddy aesthetic has always been there: earthy, rustic, sensual, fun and unapologetically atmospheric. It lives in the space between shadow and light, where fetish meets form, and craftsmanship meets curiosity.
This evolution also brought a refreshed visual identity, with heartfelt thanks to @gauvajagular for translating the soul of Darkroom Daddy into a powerful new logo that anchors the brand across every room in the house.
Beyond the studio, Mick is part of Sydney’s leather and fetish community, having served in leadership roles across organisations including Sydney Leather Men and Sydney Leather Festival.
Darkroom Daddy isn’t about being the loudest name or the most polished creator. It’s about showing up, staying curious, and making work that feels real and inspiring. Sometimes it’s messy. Sometimes it’s magic. When it clicks, there’s nothing else like it.
Welcome to Darkroom Daddy house.
